Voltemos 11 anos no tempo, na época desse álbum fenomenal que a Unlord soltou. A banda se tornou cult na cena black metal, e não à toa. Apesar de virem de um país onde não há forte tradição do som negro, o conjunto é tão competente e profissional quanto os maiores nomes da Noruega, Suécia, Finlândia e outros comuns no estilo.
A Unlord executa um som muito, muito bom, e você percebe o incrível domínio que os integrantes têm de seus instrumentos. A estrutura de cada composição é impressionante, fazendo tudo soar muito intenso, tanto nas partes mais lentas como nas velozes. Mas para os radicais, tranquilizem-se: a base de “Unlord” é o pé no acelerador!
E vale a pena falar de cada faixa dessa obra de arte. Após a breve evocação em “In to the Gates”, literalmente abrem-se os portões do inferno com “Hell’s Gates are Open”. O som começa com tanta intensidade que você para de fazer tudo só para prestar atenção nessa maravilha. Muito brutal! Depois, outra porrada começa em “Swallow All Pride”, rápida e com riffs interessantes. O legal também é essa habilidade que os músicos desenvolvem, onde alternam partes violentas com uma certa melancolia, acarretando em uma profundidade sonora invejável.
Depois, vem a também ótima “Victory!”, que começa mais cadenciada, mas mantém o barulho ao longo da faixa. O finalzinho tem até um teclado que foi muito bem utilizado na composição. E tudo volta à (a)normalidade apocalíptica com “Evil Spawn”, violentíssima e impiedosa. E o desenvolvimento dessa música arrepia, não há palavras para descrevê-lo.
Um pouco de refresco vem em “Bloodgrief”, cadenciada e bem melodiosa, que carrega uma densidade fora do normal. Os dois bumbos fritam nessa faixa! E em “Slavesend” o ouvinte é empurrado para longe do aparelho de som devido à brutalidade que a música emana. É blast beat que não acaba mais. Fantástica.
“Impaled Liar” é outra grosseria ríspida e tenebrosa. Já “Hellbender” tem uma levada que lembra bastante Motörhead (!). O ritmo é bem puxado para o rock ‘n’ roll, mas as guitarras mantêm o som em seu devido lugar, o amaldiçoado black. E “Crushed ‘Till Death” é muito foda, especialmente no berreiro que parece cheio de efeitos no “refrão”. Furiosa e fabulosa! Após o massacre, fecha o álbum a hipnotizante e simples “Hymn of the Gladiator”, instrumental de puro clima depressivo.
As guitarras são daquelas bem agudas e melódicas, como os grandes nomes do som extremo como Immortal, ou Ulver registraram em suas obras. Os grandes riffs são um dos maiores destaques da banda. O baterista é um espanto e realmente parece estar possuído, tamanha a facilidade e criatividade em tocar seu instrumento. O vocal é extremamente rasgado, quase agudo, muito extremo. Impressionante o quanto se esgoela, e não estou exagerando. O baixo acaba não aparecendo muito, mas faz seu trabalho com louvor. Em suma, a Unlord é uma banda técnica e precisa, e fez um dos mais empolgantes e violentos álbuns de metal extremo de todos os tempos.
A mixagem é a coisa mais esquisita nesse trabalho: ao ouvir com cuidado, nota-se que os instrumentos se dividem nos canais de som. Um exemplo é o vocal, que cai para um lado, a bateria vai para o outro, as guitarras também aparecem desigualmente, e por aí vai. “Gladiator” não é lá muito bem produzido, mas soa tão verdadeiro que se revela um primor do black metal mundial. As músicas são todas irresistíveis, e passam aquele sentimento true como uma banda do gênero deve fazer.
Fãs de Marduk, Dark Funeral e afins, completem sua coleção de extremismo com esse álbum, é garantia de muita qualidade.

Unlord - Gladiator
Let´s go back in time, 11 years ago, when Unlord had released this phenomenal album. It´s no wonder that the band has become cult on the black metal scene. Even though they come from a country where black metal sound has no tradition at all, they are as capable and as professional as the greatest names from Norway, Sueden, Finland among others.
Unlord performs a really really good sound and it is noticeable the incredible mastery the band members have on their instruments. The structure of each composition is so amazing that everything sounds so intense, in both slow and fast parts. And as for the radicals, well, be cool: the Unlord basis is a foot on the accelerator!
It is worth comenting on each of the tracks of this fine piece of art. Right after a brief evocation on "Into the Gates", literally "Hell´s Gates are Open". The sound starts so intense that you´ll do anything just to pay attention to this wonderful thing. Really brutal! Right after, comes another punch with "Swallow All Pride", wich is a fast song with interesting riffs. Another great thing to realize is the ability developed by these musicians, where they interchange melancholic and violent parts, acquiring an enviable sound depth.
Just next, comes the great "Victory!", which starts on a more cadenced way, but keeping on the noise along the track. At the very ending there´s even a keybord, very well used on the composition. And everything comes back to the apocalyptic (ab)normality when "Evil Spawn" begins, violent and ruthless. The progress of this song is shivering, there´s no words to describe it.
And then, a bit of refreshment. "Bloodgrief" is a cadenced and melodious tune, which carries an outstanding density. The double bass drum goes wild on this track. And on "Slavesend" the brutality that pours to our ears throw us away from the stereo system. It´s a never ending blast beat. Amazing.
"Impaled Liar" is another harsh and hellish rudeness. On the other hand, "Hellbender" kind of reminds me of Motörhead (!). It has a rock´n´roll feel, but the guitars keep the sound in place: the cursed black. And "Crushed 'Till Death" is a kick in the ass, specially the screaming part that sounds full of effects on the "chorus". Furious and fabulous! Right after the massacre, the album ends with the mesmerizing and simple "Hymn of the Gladiator", a depressive mood instrumental.
Their guitars are piercing and melodical at the same time, in the same way that great names of the extreme sound, such as Immortal or Ulver, have registered on their albums. Their great riffs are among the best qualities of the band. Their drummer is astonishing and seems like he´s posessed, such is the easiness and criativity he has while playing his instrument. The lead singer has a torn out voice, almost high-pitched, really extreme. It´s amazing how he squeals, and I´m not joking. The bass player doesn´t show off very much, but performs an accolade job. In short, Unlord is a precise and technical band who´s done one of the most violent and breathtaking extreme metal album of all times.
The mixing is the weirdest thing: when listening carefully you can notice how the instruments split into the music channels. For example, the vocal goes to one side, the drums to the other and the guitars appear uniqually, and so on. "Gladiator" is not the best produced album, but sounds so true that it is a perfection of the world wide black metal. The songs are irrestible and they all have that true feel every band of this kind should.
Marduk fans, Dark Funeral fans, and everyone alike, you shall complete your extreme music colection with this album. It´s ensured quality!
